There are many reasons why a computer won’t turn on. There are different things to look for if you are running a desktop or laptop computer system.
Desktop Computers
If you are running a desktop computer, make sure that you have checked the connection to your power source. Is the power cord connected to the back of the computer? Is it plugged into a wall outlet or a battery backup unit? If it is in a battery backup unit is the unit powered on? If you suspect that the battery backup has failed or is not working, then try moving your computer’s power cord to the surge only side of the UPS and see if the computer will power on when you press the power button. Also, check for a switch on your computer’s power supply unit. There may be a small switch that may have been moved to the off position. Flipping that switch to the on position may restore the power to your computer. If all these steps fail, then you may have a bad power supply. It might be that your computer turns on properly but still appears to be off. Have you checked the monitor or display panel that is connected to your computer? Try turning the monitor off and back on. If the computer is on and the monitor shows a power LED and it is on, then check the video cable connection. Are there any loose video cables or is the video cable too tight and possibly pulling the cable out of its connector?
Another reason that your computer won’t turn on could be related to the RAM or memory installed onto the motherboard. If you are comfortable opening your desktop computer then you can try to reseat the RAM and see if the computer will power on normally. By the way, most computers will have a beeping code pattern or an LED light pattern that helps determine what might be wrong. If you hear or see any such patterns then you will need to consult the manufacturer’s website, manual, or other source that will show a chart or list of the codes and their corresponding meanings.
Furthermore, your hard drive might be failing or has already failed. Symptoms of a failed storage drive may include a series of blue screen crashes, Startup Repair constantly running, boot loops, constant checking of the computer’s disks, black screens, Windows hanging, or other crashes. Please contact Lucas Marketing and Tech Services if you are experiencing any of these issues.
Laptop Computers
Many of the same symptoms and problems can plague a laptop. Check your power source and power adapter, check and reseat the RAM, and check the hard drive.
There are a couple extra things to check and do for laptop computers. First, check to ensure that your original AC adapter and power cord are being used. Most often, universal AC adapters will cause over voltage issues with your computer even if there is a tip that fits your laptop’s charging port. Another thing to try with laptops that won’t turn on; remove the battery and try to connect the AC adapter only and press the power button. If the laptop turns on and boots into Windows, then this may mean that the battery has a problem, or the Windows operating system has somehow lost sight of your system’s battery. Reseating the battery after you turn the laptop on often corrects the connectivity to your battery’s charging capability and Windows will detect the battery. Be sure to let the battery charge to 100% and then unplug the AC adapter and let the laptop drain the battery. If the battery drains at an acceptable rate, then your problem may be solved. Plug the AC adapter back in and make sure the battery will charge normally.
